Sleep Studies

Diagnostic sleep testing is performed at Floyd County Medical Center by the staff of Midwest Sleep Services, Inc. of Waterloo, IA.

Midwest Sleep Services, Inc. was founded in 2004 and provides diagnostic sleep testing at its independent diagnostic testing facility in Waterloo, Iowa, and through its outreach program at contracted health care facilities throughout the state of Iowa.

Good sleep is the cornerstone of good health. Unfortunately, many people suffer from disorders that impair their ability to get the sound, healthful sleep they need. Fortunately, sleep apnea and breathing related sleep disorders can be effectively treated once properly diagnosed through a sleep study.

You may be a candidate for a sleep study if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Snoring
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Feeling tired when you wake in the morning
  • Morning headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Irritability, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating
  • You wake up choking or gasping, or with a racing hear
  • Difficulty staying awake when driving, reading, attending a meeting or watching tv
  • You've been told you hold your breath during sleep

If you think you may be a candidate for a sleep study, please contact your local physician to discuss the necessity for diagnostic sleep testing. You may be scheduled
for a sleep study and/or an EEG.

A sleep study, known as a polysomnogram, will establish the presence of most sleep disorders. During a sleep study, brain wave activity is monitored as well as heart rate, airflow, oxygen levels in the blood, body position, chest and abdomen movement, eye activity, and muscle movements. The sleep study is pain-free and is accomplished through the use of patches and belts.

An EEG records the electrical activity of the brain. This test is not painful and does not involve any needles. The patient's head is measured and electrodes are placed on the scalp with a paste. The test is performed by an EEG technician, and takes about 90 minutes.

Our sleep lab is staffed by highly trained sleep professionals who then send your results to your referring physician for follow up.

Midwest Sleep Services, Inc. in partnership with Floyd County Medical Center, and your primary care physician, believes that ‘everyone deserves a good night sleep'.
