American Heart Association On-Line Courses

The American Heart Association (AHA) offers a variety of courses on-line at http://onlineaha.org/courses.  Scroll through the list to choose the class you would like to take.

Successful completion of an AHA Heartsaver Course includes three parts:

  • Part 1: AHA Heartsaver online course
  • Part 2: hands-on skills practice session with an authorized AHA Instructor within 60 days
  • Part 3: hands-on skills test with an authorized AHA Instructor within 60 days

Floyd County Medical Center is pleased to offer Parts 2 and 3 for Heartsaver Courses.  Practice and skills testing will be scheduled to meet the needs of each student.

Part 1 costs vary by course and cover only the on-line portion.  When Part 1 is successfully completed, students will print out a Certificate of Completion.  This certificate is required to proceed with Parts 2 and 3.

Cost for the skills practice session (Part 2) and skills testing (Part 3) is $25.00 per student for each Heartsaver Course.

Students are encouraged to call the Education Department to schedule Parts 2 and 3 prior to purchasing Part 1.

Successful completion of the AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) Course involves a blended learning approach.  This includes:

  • Completing the on-line HeartCode BLS course content (including exam)
  • Completing the classroom session with an authorized AHA Instructor within 60 days.  This session includes watching the HeartCode BLS video, skills practice, and skills testing.

Floyd County Medical Center is pleased to offer the classroom session.  This session can be scheduled to meet the needs of each student.

The on-line AHA HeartCode BLS has a separate fee.  Upon completion, students will print out a Certificate of Completion.  This certificate is required to proceed to the classroom session.

Cost for the BLS classroom session is $35.00 per student.

Students are encouraged to call the Education Department to schedule the classroom session prior to purchasing the on-line course content.

Adult First Aid

American Heart Association Heartsaver Adult First Aid class is offered to groups of five or more and may be scheduled throughout the year. Cost for the three-hour course and book is $40 per person. 

This course is designed for people with no medical background and certifies the individual in how to manage illness and injuries across the lifespan (children and adults) in the first few minutes of an emergency until professional help arrives. Topics include first aid basics, personal protection, medical emergencies, injury emergencies (including bandaging and splinting), and environmental emergencies. Re-certification is required every two years.

Pediatric First Aid

American Heart Association Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid class is offered to groups of five or more and may be scheduled throughout the year. Cost for the three-hour course and book is $40 per person. 

This course is designed for people with no medical background and certifies the individual in how to manage illness and injuries in a child in the first few minutes of an emergency until professional help arrives. Topics include child safety, first aid basics, medical emergencies, injury emergencies, and environmental emergencies. This course reviews the proper administration of asthma inhalers and EpiPens for severe allergic reactions. This course also teaches tips for the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome and prevention of the most common fatal injuries in infants and children. This course is ideal for schools, teachers, childcare professionals, daycare centers, and camps.  Re-certification is required every two years.

CPR

American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR class is offered to groups of five or more and may be scheduled throughout the year. Cost for the three-hour course and book is $45 per person.

This course is designed for people with no medical background and certifies the individual in adult, child and infant CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and choking emergencies. This course also certifies the student in the proper application and use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Re-certification is required every two years.

When taking both the CPR course and either First Aid course, the cost for both classes is $80 per person.

 

Babysitter's Training

American Red Cross Babysitter's Training is offered each year in early June. This course is designed for boys and girls 11 to 15 years old. Cost is $45, payable the day of class. Handbook and snacks are included. Participants need to bring a sack lunch. For more information or to pre-register, call the Education Department at (641) 257-4370. Class size is limited.

Childbirth Education

Couples interested in learning more about pregnancy, childbirth, and infant care are encouraged to attend any of the following classes. All classes are taught by experienced obstetrical nurses.  Experienced couples may attend the last three nights of the class. Tours are also available for older brother(s) and/or sister(s) if you desire. Please call the Birth Center to arrange for a tour, register for a class, or for more information.

2017 Childbirth Education Class Schedule:

  • January 5, 12, 19, 26
  • April 6, 13, 20, 27
  • July 6, 13, 20, 27
  • October 5, 12, 19, 26

Each four-night class meets from 6:30-9:30 pm. Pre-registration is required.

Cost:  $65.00 for complete course or $50.00 for Refresher Class
Cost is waived for mothers scheduled to deliver at FCMC.

I want to send my highest appreciation to the beyond wonderful nurse who did bloodwork on me this morning. I have never had a positive blood drawing experience in my life, but this woman was truly amazing. I hope to see her again and definitely hope she is at FCMC for years to come.
